A need for self-expression is what inspired newcomer Maria Becerra to launch her musical career – which today is endorsed by artists such as Cazzu, Tini and J Balvin, to name a few.
âI have always been dramatic and sensitive and I needed to express it,â Becerra said. Billboard. “When I was seven I realized I could sing and at 12 I started to write down my thoughts and feelings.”
In 2015, the Argentinian artist went viral after posting a monologue on Facebook, where she played and shaved. It was then that she launched her YouTube channel to display all of her other talents.
Four years later, Becerra officially launched her music career with the release of her debut EP. 222. âThat’s when I knew I wanted to make 100% music and make a living from it,â she adds. âI have always loved the arts. It was my refuge.
Becerra, who is inspired by great pop and R&B powers such as Rihanna, Ariana Grande, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion and Whitney Houston, thanks Argentinian rappers FMK and Big One for being the first artists to believe in her and to give him an opportunity in stage music. Since then, she has collaborated with prominent names such as Lyanno, Rauw Alejandro, Tini, Cazzu and Khea.
âWe are all dedicated to the same thing. I think it’s important to show that there is unity and not competition, âshe said. “It’s nice to see how the minds of other artists work.”
Most recently, Becerra – who signed with independent label 300 Entertainment in 2020 – landed the biggest collaboration of her two-year career, joining Balvin on “Que Mas Pues?”
The song is a melodious gem of reggaetón surrounded by catchy hooks left and right, where the two artists go back and forth on a relationship that hasn’t worked and will never come to fruition. The energy of their harmonies comes out on the track, Balvin with his distinct voice and Becerra with his mellow tones.
âHe contacted me with the track, saying he created the song with me in mind,â she recalls. âWe communicated virtually and met for the first time when we shot the clip in New York. “
Becerra, who still can’t believe the opportunity presented itself so early in her career, says Balvin offered her a lot of great advice when they met. âWe don’t have to lose the quality of being human,â she notes. âWe are all human and the most important thing is to be a good person to the people around you. “
